Of all citizens who own ride motorcycles, 1% fit into the category of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. Hence the phrase ‘the one per centers’ which can be located on various Outlaw Gangs club jackets or ‘colours’. The bikies’ ‘colours’ refers to the official club emblem of the group, usually positioned in the centre back of their leather jacket.
In 1966, a Scotsman named William George ‘Jock’ Ross organized the formation of a Sydney based outlaw motorcycle gang named the ‘Comanchero’, the clubhouse was set up in the western suburbs of Sydney.
Club patches indicate the wearer’s position in the club such as ‘President’, ‘Commander’, ‘Vice President’ ,‘Sergeant-at-Arms’ and ‘Secretary’. ‘M.C.’ means the wearer is a member of a ‘Motorcycle Club’, not a street gang.
The Comanchero Club prospered through to 1982 when Jock’s authority began to be challenged and dissension grew among the members. Shortly after Xmas 1982, a number of members left as a breakaway group and became a second chapter of the Comanchero.
The President of the breakaway group, Anthony Mark ‘Snoddy’ Spencer, and another member Charles Paul ‘Charlie’ Scibberas, visited the USA where they associated with and were accepted by the Bandidos Bikie Gang.
Permission was granted for a Chapter to be started of the Bandidos in Australia, so the second chapter of Comancheros’ adopted the colours of the Bandidos. The newly formed Bandidos, burnt their formers colours. Unauthorized resignation was classified as desertion. Whatever the reason for the split, great animosity and violent rivalry now existed.
On Friday, 10th of August 1984, the Presidents of both gangs, ‘Jock’ Ross and ‘Snoddy’ Spencer, spoke on the phone and war was declared. Rules of War were drawn up including a prohibition of members being ‘hit’ at their homes or places of work, but if they met at any other location, a confrontation would take place.
Both clubhouses were turned into fortresses with windows being boarded up and barbed wire stretched across entrances which eventually lead to the fathers day shootout at the Viking Tavern, Milperra 2nd of September 1984.
